Abstract

In this book, Dr. Sikandar Hayat provides a detailed and systematic analysis of the concept of charisma and its application to the case of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah during the crisis-ridden decade of 1937-47 in British India, leading up to the creation of Pakistan in August 1947. Hardly any other author has defined or described the political leadership of Jinnah that way, as a charismatic leader of the Indian Muslims (and indeed as first governor-general of Pakistan!). In this sense, it is a unique and distinct study and, as one leading American historian on South Asia, Prof. Roger D. Long, puts it, ‘Dr. Hayat’s analysis of Jinnah as a charismatic figure fills an important lacuna in the field’. The first edition of the book (2008) is recipient of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan’s ‘Best Book Publication Award’ in Social Sciences and Humanities.

Dr. Sikandar Hayat’s brief introduction to the book will be followed by a Panel Discussion, led by Dr. Saeed Shafqat, Dr. Arfa Sayeda Zehra and Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Chawla.

Dr. Sikandar Hayat is Distinguished Professor of History and Public Policy and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences at FC College University, Lahore.

Oxford University Press Pakistan will establish a book stall.
