Mr. Ahmed Rashid is the Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review and The Daily Telegraph of London. He has reported on this area for thirty years. He has written extensively on the international competition for oil and gas pipelines in Central Asia, China and Iran, on the drug smuggling trades, and on Islamic fundamentalism in that region. He is the author of “The Resurgence of Central Asia: Islam and Nationalism?”- 1994, “Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil and Militant Fundamentalism in Central Asia” – 2000, “Jihad: The Rise of militant Islam in Central Asia” 2002, “Decent into Chaos: How the war against Islamic extremism is being lost in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia” – 2009,Taliban: The Power of Militant Islam in Afghanistan and Beyond– 2010 and most recently “Pakistan on the Brink: The Future of America, Pakistan, and Afghanistan” – 2012. In 2001, Mr. Rashid was awarded the Nisar Osmani Award for Courage in Journalism for his widely acclaimed study of the Taliban.
