Mr. Arif Hasan is one of the leading commentators on urbanization and urban planning in Pakistan, and author of Participatory Development, The Unplanned Revolution, Planning and Development Options for Karachi, The Scale and Causes of Urban Change in Pakistan among other books. He is currently a visiting fellow at the International Institute for Environment and Development, UK; a member of the India Committee of Honour for the International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism and a member of the UN Advisory Group on Forced Evictions. He has received a number of awards for his work including the UN Year for the Shelterless Memorial Award of the Japanese Government (1990), the Prince Claus Award of the Netherlands Government (2000), and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz of the Government of Pakistan (2001). Recently, he has been given a Life Time Achievement Award by the Institute of Architects, Pakistan (2003). The Orangi Pilot Project-Research and Training Institute, of which Arif Hasan is Chairman, received the British Housing Foundation’s World Habitat Award in 2002. He is also on the board of several international journals and research organizations including the Bangkok based Asian Coalition for Housing Rights of which he is a founding member.
